of all the titles currently in publication or on the drawing boards here at DEFIANT, THE GOOD GUYS is my favorite. When Jim told me the high concept of the book way back in October of 1992, I couldn't get the smile off my face. This was wish fulfillment! How many times in your life have you thought, "If only I were super-strong, I could..." or "Wouldn't it be great if I could leap off a balcony and fly right in front of that girl I want to impress?" 
  THE GOOD GUYS takes eight ordinary kids and grants them their dreams of becoming superheroes. I don't know about you, but I'm jealous! Now I can hardly wait to see what they will do with these powers and compare it to what I might have done. I have a funny feeling it's a little more difficult being a superhero than we might imagine. 
  We've aid before that DEFIANT prides itself on "keeping reality real." even in our most fantastic stories. What better way to make our newest heroes as real as possible than by modeling them on real kids? THE GOOD GUYS Casting Call Contest sounded like a fun idea that would involve our fans and, once the winner debuted in the book, enable readers to identify with the kids that much more. The contest would also keep up DEFIANT's tradition of innovation: To the best of our knowledge, casting a comic book as if it were a movie has never before been done. 
  To say the least, I was flabbergasted at how many entries we actually received, from kids all over the world! Having seen the submissions flow in, I thank my lucky stars that I was not one of the judges. How Deborah Purcell, Jim Shooter, Grey, and Gareb Shamus decided on eight kids was truly a superhuman effort, but they did it.  
  What I particularly liked about this contest was the involvement of both fans and retailers. Retailers were really enthusiastic about the contest. about entering customers into it, and even entering friends, relatives, and school classes. They did whatever they could to drum up interest. this is what makes the comic book business so wonderful: People really care. 
  THE GOOD GUYS Casting Call Contest was so successful that we are already planning an ongoing Good Guys contest for guest stars and a Bad Guys contest for older kids and adults. We might even have a Bad Guys contest exclusively for retailers! Look for future announcements in both DEFIANT comic books and Wizard magazine. 
  Speaking of Wizard, I would like to extend a special thanks to Gareb Shamus, the Big Cheese himself, and his whole staff. Without their support, the contest would not have been the success it was. We look forward to continuing to work with them in the future. 
  For all of you kids who were not chosen, I know I speak for everyone at DEFIANT when I say Thank You! You are all genuine Good Guys as far as we're concerned! 
  
  
Website Commentary: This is a fairly straightforward pat on their own back for creating a marketing angle that generated some talk and some buzz in the industry. In retrospect, the marketing angle may have generated a lot of buzz, but did it bring in loyal readers they needed to keep the series going?  Early sales on most of the Defiant titles exceeded than the number of readers. Did this contest frustrate the losers? These questions remain unanswered.

On the eve of our next two title launches (WAR DANCER and CHARLEMAGNE), I thought I would take the opportunity to bring you up-to-date on some of the marketing-related doings here at DEFIANT. First, as you might have heard, CHARLEMAGNE #0--which was written by Jim Shooter, penciled by Adam Pollina, and inked by Mike Witherby--will be polybagged in Hero Illustrated #9 (not bound-in as originally planned). This issue will not be printed again as a stand-alone comic but will eventually be included in a CHARLEMAGNE trade paperback collection. 
  We were so pleased with the fan interaction with The Good Guys Casting Call Contest that we decided to do another one. This time is The Bad Guys we're looking for, and we're going to choose one Bad Guy from among fans 16 and older, and one from among comic book retailers. The prize is $1,000 cash for each winner, plus each winner's name and likeness created into a villain who will die a terrible death in an upcoming issue of  THE GOOD GUYS. The contest rules and entry forms can be found in issue #32 of Wizard (March cover date) and issue #7 of Entertainment Retailing (February cover date). Good luck, and may the worst guy--or gal--win! 
  Scheduled to begin in March, DEFIANT will be producing a newsletter for fans and retailers. We haven't yet decided what to call the newsletter (my idea was "DEFIANT Newsletter"--so much for my imagination!), but regardless, it should offer you an interesting insider's view on some of the goings-on here at DEFIANT. 
  Due to popular demand, Jim Shooter will be conducting many of his "How to Create Comics" seminars, he explained, "I want to give something back to the industry." Looks like he'll get hi wish, if even a fraction of the hundreds of people who've attended his seminars take to heart Jim's tips on creating, writing, and drawing comics! Future seminars will be held at the University of Oklahoma; Los Angeles' Golden Apple Comics; San Francisco's Golden Gate Park; and the Chicago Comic-Con. Hero Illustrated has agreed to be our cosponsor for these events, supplying every attendee with  free packet of art supplies. Watch for seminars in your area! Until then, stay DEFIANT!
